Day 1: Food Dye Fun with Everyday Art

Hi! We're Emily and Jaime over at Everyday Art and we are excited to show you a super fun project today over here at Home Spun Threads. We think that everyone can create a little art everyday, perhaps its the meal you created, perhaps its the project you completed, or most importantly, perhaps is the smiles on your kids faces when you do something fun.

This is the perfect project because it is fun for kids ages 2 to high school (and fun for their parents--I love doing this).
Today we bring you....
How fun is that? Anyone else want a little color to brighten up the day?
Depending on your kids' interest and age, you can easily turn the project into a science lesson about hydrophobic and hydrophillic molecules, about attraction and repulsion, but about how soap works to wash our hands, or you could just have fun because it looks really cool. :)
Want to have fun with your kids today? Here's what you do.

1) Get some milk (preferably whole, but I used 1% with satisfactory results).
2) Pour the milk into a baking dish or shallow bowl.
3) Apply drops of food coloring.
4) Completely not necessay, but I also poured some cooking oil in the milk to demonstrate how oil and milk don't mix. The oil also looks cool when you dip the soap in it.
5) Now get your cotton swab and dip it into some soap (hand soap, dish soap, whatever).
6) Dip your soap-saturated cotton swap into the food dye or into the oil and watch what happens!
You'll be amazed at how quickly things will happen.
What fun pretty colors you can make!
Have fun playing with your kids today.

Over at Everyday Art, we have lots of other fun projects for kids, including painting with balls.

How fun is that?!
We also love to cook good food (we share a weekly menu every Sunday to spread some inspiration), do hand crafts like knit and crochet,  and diy projects. Stop on over and checkn us out ! We'd love to hear from you.

Lots of love,

  3. My kids just finished up doing this and had a blast! In the words of my 4 year old, "This is amazing!" They loved seeing the effects the soap made and the different colors they could make. We only stopped because I ran out of milk! Thanks for sharing.
